CLEVELAND – Sometimes acts of kindness come from the most unexpected places and people.

In this case, that act of kindness came from an 11-year-old who traveled all the way from Florida to Cleveland to donate 100 children’s DVDs to UH Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital.

“I want them to be happy and I want them to love it and enjoy it,” said 11-year-old Kayla Abramowitz.

She’s the pre-teen behind Kayla Cares 4 Kids, a campaign she started to deliver DVDs to children’s hospitals across the country, bringing needed smiles to very young patients.

One of those patients includes her younger brother, Ethan. Kayla’s parents told NewsChannel5 they’ve made several trips to the hospital in just this year alone with Ethan, who underwent and continues extensive treatment for Eosinophilic Esophagitis and Juvenile Arthritis.

But when they were in the hospital, Kayla said, “We both weren’t able to move and there was a short selection of DVDs. So we ran out after a while so we wanted to help other kids so they didn’t have to feel just like us.”

Hoping to bring a smile to every kid just like her brother, Kayla began collecting DVDs going around her North Palm Beach, Florida neighborhood, at first collecting door-to-door.  But as word spread out, so increased the number of DVDs donated.

In July, Kayla’s family visited the area, first stopping at a children’s hospital in Pittsburgh and then visiting Cleveland to fill a few empty shelves at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital.

“This is actually quite special. It’s really unique for a family to travel so far to bring us movies. It’s really, definitely, it’s nice,” said Mandy Hackle, a Family Resource Liaison at UH Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital.

Working with the families being treated there, Hackley said, “Hospitals can be very stressful for children. The fact that they have books that they can check out and movies they can watch, it brings them a lot of joy and it reduces their stress while they’re in the hospital. ”

Kayla has already donated more than 900 DVDs to at least 12 children’s hospitals across the country. Checking on her Facebook page, it looks like she just added a children’s hospital in California to that list.

The 11-year-old, with the help of parents, uses Facebook to gather the donations and is making it her goal to reach every children’s hospital in the United States, which is 250 according to Kayla’s parents.

“It’s pretty cool because I get to visit so many places,” said Kayla adding, “it’ll make a difference in the world and it’ll help children feel better so, donate more!”
