TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Kayla Abramowitz has a heart to help others. She started an organization called Kayla Cares 4 Kids, which donated books, games, DVD’s board games and a lot of other things to hospitals across the country.
Wednesday, she dropped by Tampa General Hospital to donate 101 items, including an XBOX 360.
“Some of the items we put into the collections ourselves, because we don’t need the items anymore. So we all contribute,” Kayla said.
Kayla’s heart for children was born out of circumstances in her own young life.
She has Crohn’s Disease and juvenile arthritis and having spent time the hospital on a regular basis, she knows what it’s like.
“At my children’s hospital, I didn’t want to get out of the bed at all. So I had nothing to do and I was just kind of making myself feel even more sick. It was very boring.”
So she started ‘Kayla Cares’ to make sure others like 10-year-old Shane Kaufman can have some semblance of normalcy while in the hospital.
Shane’s mom Denielle Fager appreciates the gesture10,000.
“They get a better feeling, a little more joy coming from someone their own age, their own peer group. They feel like they’re a normal child like anybody else,” Fager said. And that’s why Kayla does what she does. She’s gone to every state and visited 84 hospitals, donating 10,000 items.
“It just makes me happy because I know what they’re going through. The fact that they’re happy.. it just warms my heart.”
